HAPPY MADRAS DAY
Madras is not just a name, it is an emotion of people from Tamil Nadu. No, I am sorry. Now, Chennai is not just an emotion for people from Tamil Nadu. It is the emotion for the whole of India. The people from various part of India is marching towards Chennai and making the city great. We the people feeling some anonymous pride always when answering that Chennai is our current residence. Even some of us may hear that person who is residing in Chengalpet and Melmaruvathur also using the name of Chennai for its pride even though those places or not even in the Chennai corporation jurisdiction.
For every person in this world, their native will be close to their heart but after when they stayed a little while in Chennai. Their thought may differ a lot. There is a popular saying in Tamil "வந்தாரை வாழவைக்கும் தமிழகம்". This statement is more apt for Chennai.
Today is the 381st birth anniversary of Madras. So, we will see some historical reasons why August 22 is celebrated as the Madras day first. In 1639, the British East Indian company bought a piece of land near the seashore in the current Chennai after not getting proper support from the locals on the coromandel coast. The motto of the British is to build a port to carry out their business in the southern part of the Hindustan. So, they bought the land from the Vijaya Nagar because at that time from Pulicat to Santhome area were under the control of Rajah Venkatapa Naicker. The piece of land near the coast is bought by the British. The British representative Francis Day and his translator Andrew Cogan made this deal with the help of Ayyapa Naicker who is the brother of Rajah Venkatapa Naicker. Then Rajah helped the British to set there Warehouses and Colonies and also they started to build St. George Fort in the year 1940 in the land they bought. This Agreement was made and Piece of land in Madrasapattinam was sold to the British on August 22, 1639. This is the turning point of Madras. Now Chennai Corpaoration is the second old corporation in the World after London.
There are many reasons said as a myth for the name of Madrasapattinam. One such reason was the name of Madrasapattinam is came after the name of Fisherman Madaresan who lived in the place where the Vijaya Nagar sold to the British. Like most of the Empires, golden stories are written in blood, the story of Madrasapattinam is also started like that only. Mughals captured the Madras in the year 1687 and made a deal with the British. There are some other rivalries that also happened to capture Madras. This is the First Chapter of Chennai from then to now.
Madras never disappointed the people who came to fulfill their dreams and not only them it also made people who came without any vision to their future also to stabilize. Chennai has seen many obstacles but never gave up and the people from Chennai also never made Chennai fall down. Chennai made everyone to keep on evolving. Chennai gave life for all sectors since the day it was formed and stand according to the lines of Kanniyan Pungundranar "யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்". The people from the outside may have many kinds of impressions about this city. It may Good or Bad but the truth is Madras has its own fame and produced many famous personalities in this world. Starting from world-famous writer R.K. Narayan to Olympic Medalist Gagan Narang including former Indian Cricket player Syed Kirmani. There are many other important World known personalities have been born in Madras or spent some part of their life in Chennai. Even Google CEO Sundar Pichai spent his schooling in Chennai.
Most of South Indians are known by the common brand as "MADRASI". They can make fun with that name but people of Madras have everything to give back a slipper shot answer. The unity of Tamil People was showcased to this world in Marina through Jallikattu protest, 2017. The helping tendency and kind heart of the people were showcased in the Chennai Flood 2015. The people of Madras always gave their effort to make this city Great. The skin of the people may be dark but our mind is always fair enough. The discrimination of real Madras people that is people's current VADACHENNAI people is not at all good. The current status of Chennai is due to the hard work of the Heros only. The Government is also not showing real concern towards the people. Madras is the place where we can find everything A to Z. Madras has many places that will excite you and it has many inspirational stories too. Some of the millionaires of current Chennai are one of the kind. They were started their Career in Madras from scratch and reached this place. CHENNAI or SINGARA CHENNAI may be cool to hear but the name "MADRAS" is the start of everything. Once again I wish everyone "HAPPY MADRAS DAY".
Very true
